Abstract
Cadential delay is commonly identified as a harmonic event, yet its perceptual force also depends on contrapuntal preparation, metric position, and the voice in which dissonance is sustained. This article asks how delayed resolution can direct listening in a bounded group of public-domain four-part chorales associated with Johann Sebastian Bach. Score-based comparative analysis follows pre-cadential scale degrees, suspensions, bass motion, phrase rhythm, inner-voice activity, and the timing of resolution across contrasting phrase endings. The argument is that delay intensifies closure when contrapuntal and metric expectations converge, that inner voices can carry decisive temporal friction, and that comparable harmonic goals acquire different rhetorical weight through phrase placement. The article therefore develops a relational account of cadence in which an event gains analytical meaning from preparation, distribution among voices, and subsequent formal reinterpretation rather than from harmonic label alone. Because the surviving source does not preserve an edition-specific list of analysed chorales or measure-level annotations, these claims remain qualitative analytical propositions tied to the identified score families rather than independently reproducible frequency statements.

The larger conclusion is that cadence is better understood as a temporal process distributed across voices than as a terminal chord label.
