Abstract

The waltz is conventionally recognized through a stable triple-meter profile, yet melodic accent, phrase boundaries, grouping, and cadential timing can make the local hierarchy of beats uncertain. This article asks how such metric ambiguity can remain intelligible without dissolving the genre identity of the waltz. It compares a supplied corpus of public-domain nineteenth-century waltzes attributed to Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, and Johann Strauss II through score-based attention to accompaniment pattern, melodic accent, phrase length, hemiola-like grouping, cadential arrival, and transitions between local formal functions. The comparison advances three related findings: accompanimental cues can preserve waltz identity while melodic accents shift; ambiguity is especially consequential around changes of phrase function; and cadence can retrospectively clarify the metric status of earlier events. The argument therefore locates metric ambiguity in the temporal relation between an initially plausible hearing and later confirmation, rather than in a permanent loss of triple meter. Its contribution is music-analytical and performance-oriented: it connects genre cue, formal function, and retrospective hearing while distinguishing what can be inferred from notation from what would require evidence from actual performances. 1 Introduction

This is consistent with McKee's treatment of waltz structure as inseparable from dance-derived bodily rhythm and with London's account of meter as a learned, context-sensitive mode of temporal attention(6)(5). The comparison therefore tests metric ambiguity at more than one scale. 4 Ambiguity often emerges at transitions between local phrase functions

Expectation-based theories make this claim intelligible: the significance of an event is partly determined by what follows it, and completion or closure can recast an earlier deviation as preparation, displacement, or temporary conflict rather than as a new metric state(7)(2). Caplin's account of cadential function further helps distinguish a cadence as a formal process from a single chord or accent(1).

Across the four composer groups, the proposed sequence is therefore preparation, local competition, and clarification. The first stage establishes enough metric regularity for displacement to be perceptible. The second introduces a competing accentual or grouping cue. The third determines whether that cue was structurally consequential by confirming, correcting, or reinterpreting the listener's earlier expectation. This sequence supports the article's central thesis more precisely than the phrase “mobile downbeat” would by itself, because it identifies the temporal conditions under which the downbeat can seem locally unstable while the genre remains recognizable.

Retrospective clarification should not, however, be projected backward as though the later cadence were already perceptually available at the beginning of the phrase. A convincing analysis must preserve the difference between what is plausible at the first hearing and what becomes clear after the cadence. That distinction is particularly relevant to performance: a performer may choose to emphasize or underplay the local conflict, but the present score-based study cannot infer such choices without performance evidence.

6 Discussion

The comparison confines its conclusions to a specific music-analytical problem: how a waltz can retain a recognizable metric identity while local accentual organization becomes uncertain. A resistant case is useful because it separates resemblance from explanation. A melodic displacement that looks similar across two scores need not have the same metric effect if accompaniment, phrase function, tempo, or cadential placement differs. Evidence that complicates one of the three propositions therefore requires a narrower claim rather than dismissal of the case.

The analysis also clarifies the relationship between notation and performance. Meter is experienced through attention, bodily entrainment, and temporally patterned expectation, not through notation alone(5). For performers, the score may present competing cues that can be shaped through articulation, timing, dynamics, and phrasing. Yet those possibilities are not evidence that performers historically or presently make the same interpretive choices. The article therefore treats performance as an analytically relevant horizon while reserving empirical claims about realization for a future study with recordings or performer-centered evidence.

Its contribution is consequently methodological as well as interpretive. The strongest use of metric ambiguity is diagnostic: it names a temporary conflict among identifiable musical layers and requires an account of how that conflict develops and resolves. The term becomes less useful when it simply replaces more specific descriptions such as syncopation, accent displacement, hemiola, phrase overlap, or cadential delay. Maintaining that boundary keeps the argument within the disciplinary standards of music theory and prevents rhetorical uncertainty from substituting for analytical evidence.

Comparison also demands asymmetry. The four composer groups need not display metric ambiguity with equal clarity, and the least cooperative case may carry special analytical weight. It tests whether the three propositions identify connected musical processes or merely repeat the article's vocabulary. Allowing a claim to contract when the score resists it turns variation into a condition of interpretation rather than a problem to be edited away.

The comparative gain in Turning the Accent comes from holding the analytical question steady while allowing the structural answer to vary. Each group is asked how ambiguity is prepared, how accent is distributed between accompaniment and melody, how phrase function affects that distribution, and how cadence confirms or revises the hearing. Surface resemblance is therefore insufficient. Two passages may contain similar displacements but differ in metric effect because their surrounding accompaniment, phrase organization, or cadential trajectory differs.

The final stage of analysis should make uncertainty explicit. When two metric readings account for the available score features with comparable force, the article should not select one merely to produce closure. Instead, it should identify the additional edition, measure locator, recording, performance document, or contextual source needed to distinguish them. In the present manuscript, the missing primary-source locators are not a minor editorial defect; they are the principal limitation on reproducibility and on the strength of the case-level conclusions.

7 Conclusion

The study argues that waltz identity can persist when accompaniment sustains a recognizable triple-meter cue even as melodic accent, grouping, or phrase transition creates local uncertainty. Cadential process can then clarify the status of those earlier accents and reorganize the listener's interpretation retrospectively. This temporal account connects genre recognition, formal function, and metric hearing in a way directly relevant to music analysis and to the interpretive decisions faced by performers.

At the same time, the supplied manuscript does not identify the exact score editions or the passage locators on which its four composer-group readings depend. Its conclusions must therefore remain limited to the analytical model and the stated corpus labels. A work-specific, edition-specific, and, where performance claims are desired, recording- or performer-based comparison is the necessary next step.
