Contours Remembered: Melodic Shape in Public-Domain Children's Songs
Abstract
Short children's songs are often recognized despite differences among printed versions, suggesting that melodic identity can persist when exact pitch succession is altered. This article examines how contour contributes to that persistence in notated children's-song materials from early public-domain collections by William Wells Newell, Alice Bertha Gomme, Eleanor Withey Willard, and Walter Crane. The comparison tracks initial direction, registral high and low points, repetition, phrase ending, range, and the relation between melody and text, while separating score-based observations from claims about untested listener memory. Three propositions organize the reading: distinctive openings become especially salient when later phrases are repetitive; range limits help articulate otherwise similar stepwise motion; and altered endings can preserve identity when their directional profile remains comparable. The argument therefore locates melodic identity in relations among opening gesture, register, repetition, and closure rather than in literal pitch strings. Its contribution is a source-conscious vocabulary for comparative melodic reading within children's musical repertories, together with explicit limits on claims that would require tune-specific locators, performance documentation, or listener-based evidence.

1 Introduction
The notated children's-song repertory presents a recurring analytical problem: a tune may remain identifiable when printed versions alter individual pitches, local intervals, rhythmic detail, or the shape of a final phrase. Such variation makes exact pitch succession an incomplete account of musical identity. The present study therefore asks how melodic contour—understood as the directional and registral organization of a melody—contributes to continuity across printed variants. Its focus is deliberately musical and source-based. Rather than treating children's songs primarily as literary nursery texts or as evidence for developmental psychology, the article examines the organization of short melodies as they appear in historical printed collections and considers how that organization supports recognition at the level of the score.
The corpus consists of public-domain children's songs and singing-game materials preserved in four late nineteenth-century collections containing musical notation. The comparative vocabulary is restricted to features that can be read directly from such sources: initial contour, highest and lowest pitch, recurrence of melodic material, phrase ending, total and local range, and the alignment of melodic motion with textual units. These features are sufficiently concrete to support comparative music analysis while remaining modest enough to avoid unsupported claims about what children, historical performers, or modern listeners necessarily remembered.
The argument develops through three connected propositions. First, an opening contour can assume disproportionate identifying weight when the remainder of a tune relies heavily on repeated or closely related phrases. Second, registral boundaries can help listeners and performers segment music whose internal motion is predominantly conjunct. Third, a variant closing phrase may remain compatible with an established tune identity when it preserves the broad direction and registral destination of the earlier version. Taken together, these propositions describe contour not as a decorative summary of pitch movement but as a relational structure shaped by onset, register, recurrence, and closure.
This approach distinguishes score-based identity from psychological recognition. Music-cognition research has long treated contour as analytically distinct from exact interval sequence, and Dowling and Harwood discuss the role of contour, scale, and interval information in melodic perception and memory [3]. Huron's account of musical expectation likewise provides a useful framework for understanding why repetition, continuation, cadence, and stylistic probability can shape the apprehension of what comes next [6]. These studies justify treating contour and expectation as meaningful musical variables, but they do not license retrospective claims about the responses of the historical children associated with the printed sources. Accordingly, the present article uses cognition scholarship to clarify analytical terminology rather than to substitute experimental evidence for archival evidence.
The research problem is therefore both descriptive and interpretive. Descriptively, the article asks where directional change, registral extremes, recurrence, and closure occur in the selected repertory and how those features are distributed across short phrases. Interpretively, it asks when the relation among those features provides a stronger explanation of melodic continuity than a simple statement that two versions share a title, text, genre, or general tonal idiom. The analytical sequence proceeds from observable musical relations to constrained interpretation: direction is recorded before significance is assigned, and a contour-based claim is retained only when it explains a relation that would otherwise remain underspecified.
Within this study, melodic contour refers to the ordered pattern of ascent, descent, repetition, and registral return formed by successive pitch events. Range refers both to the total span of a tune and to the temporary registral field occupied by a phrase. Phrase ending refers to the direction, arrival, and degree of closure at the end of a textual-musical unit. Text setting is considered only where it clarifies musical segmentation, for example when a repeated verbal unit receives repeated melodic material or when a changed final line coincides with a changed terminal contour. These definitions keep the analysis within the disciplinary practices of music theory, historical song study, and performance-oriented score reading.
The guiding question is consequently precise: which contour relations can preserve melodic identity when printed children's-song versions differ in pitch detail or phrase ending? The objective is not to establish a universal law of musical memory, but to identify a workable analytical account for a small historical repertory. The article argues that beginnings, range boundaries, repeated internal motion, and directional closure function together as markers of identity. This account is especially relevant to Music and Performing Arts because it treats notation as a trace of repertorial practice: the printed melody is not only a sequence of pitches but a compact script for singing, movement, repetition, and return.
2 Melodic Contour in Four Printed Collections
The primary materials are William Wells Newell's Games and Songs of American Children [11], Alice Bertha Gomme's The Traditional Games of England, Scotland, and Ireland [4], Eleanor Withey Willard's Children's Singing Games [8], and Walter Crane's The Baby's Bouquet: A Fresh Bunch of Old Rhymes and Tunes [2]. Each source belongs to a different editorial and cultural setting, yet each preserves music intended for, associated with, or transmitted through children's repertories. Their value for the present comparison lies not in statistical representativeness but in the availability of short notated melodies whose compact construction makes directional profile, repetition, range, and closure readily comparable.
The analytical framework draws on established music-theoretical approaches without treating any single system as exhaustive. Meyer's discussion of expectation, pattern, continuation, and closure supports attention to the way repeated events create or frustrate formal implications [10]. Lerdahl and Jackendoff's theory of grouping provides a disciplined basis for describing how motives, phrases, and larger units can be segmented through musical cues [9]. Hatten's work on markedness and expressive interpretation supports the more limited proposition that a locally distinctive event can acquire significance through contrast with an established musical norm [5]. Kerman's advocacy of criticism as an interpretive activity beyond purely classificatory analysis informs the movement from formal observation to historically responsible argument [7], while Cook's comparative account of analytical methods supports methodological pluralism and the selection of procedures appropriate to the musical material [1].
The method is comparative rather than statistical. For each selected melody or variant relation, the reading identifies the opening directional profile, the highest and lowest pitch areas, the distribution of repeated material, the shape of phrase endings, the overall range, and the correspondence between musical and textual units. Exact interval succession remains relevant, but it is not treated as the only possible carrier of identity. The central question is whether a broader relation—for example, ascent followed by return, a stable upper boundary, or a descending closing gesture—persists when surface details change.
The procedure also distinguishes three analytical levels. The first is local: what does a single phrase do directionally? The second is relational: how does that phrase compare with what precedes or follows it? The third is repertorial: does a comparable relation recur across materially different sources strongly enough to justify a shared descriptive term? This ordering prevents the article from treating the desired conclusion as an initial premise. A contour relation becomes interpretively useful only when it clarifies the organization of a particular musical sequence.
Source control is essential because printed children's repertories are unusually susceptible to variation across editions, arrangements, collectors, and later reproductions. A changed accompaniment, transposition, editorial regularization, or rewritten ending may affect the evidence available to a contour analysis. For that reason, the claims made here remain at the level supported by the cited editions and their notated contents. The surviving manuscript record does not provide tune-by-tune page or item locators for every comparison, so the discussion does not claim a locator-dependent reconstruction of individual transmission histories. Instead, it develops and tests a comparative vocabulary against the kinds of notated relations preserved in the verified music-bearing sources.
Newell's collection is particularly important because it presents children's games and songs as materials of folklore while also preserving musical examples. In analytical terms, it foregrounds the relation between repeated social action and repeated musical design. Short game songs often depend on readily recoverable openings and recurrent phrase shapes, making them suitable for examining whether an initial directional gesture can retain identifying force after the music settles into repetition. The relevant question is not whether every tune begins uniquely, but whether a comparatively distinctive opening establishes a profile that subsequent repetition reinforces rather than erases.
Gomme's two-volume collection broadens the comparison by documenting singing rhymes, games, regional variants, and musical accompaniments. Its usefulness lies in the coexistence of closely related materials whose melodic surfaces may differ while their functional and formal roles remain comparable. Such repertory makes range especially informative. Where melodic movement is largely stepwise, a shift toward or away from an upper or lower boundary can mark segmentation even without a large leap or strongly contrasting motive. Range, in this sense, becomes an organizing parameter rather than merely a statistic describing the distance between the lowest and highest notes.
Willard's Children's Singing Games extends the comparison through a purpose-built collection of children's singing games with notated music. Its repertory is suited to examining how repeated movement patterns, phrase proportions, and terminal gestures can maintain continuity while local details vary. Within the present argument, the volume provides a third comparative setting in which melodic contour is read as part of performed children's repertory rather than as a feature inferred from nursery text alone.
Crane's The Baby's Bouquet provides a contrasting kind of source. It is an illustrated collection of old rhymes and tunes, with the tunes collected and arranged by Lucy Crane, and thus combines visual presentation, domestic music making, and children's repertory. Its arrangement context cautions against treating every printed feature as an unmediated record of oral transmission. At the same time, the presence of notated tunes makes it suitable for structural comparison. The source therefore functions as a resistant case: a contour relation is persuasive only if it remains analytically useful despite the different editorial and performative framing of the collection.
Across the four sources, the method treats repetition, range, and closure as interacting variables. A repeated middle phrase may reduce the amount of new identifying information presented after the opening; a stable registral ceiling or floor may make boundaries audible within conjunct motion; a closing descent or return may preserve the sense of completion even when exact intervals change. These relations are not equivalent to experimentally demonstrated recognition. They are score-based conditions under which identity can be described economically and compared across printed versions without reducing the tune to a literal pitch string.
3 Distinctive beginnings carry more identity when later phrases are repetitive
The first proposition concerns how identifying information is distributed within short tunes. When later phrases repeat or closely paraphrase earlier material, the opening gesture becomes a comparatively dense site of differentiation. Its importance follows from structural position rather than presumed memorability: an initial ascent, descent, turn, or repeated-note figure can orient the tune before recurrence reduces the amount of new melodic information.
Repetition alone does not prove that an opening carries identity, and an unusual beginning is not important merely because it is unusual. The relation matters when later music returns to a smaller set of directions or pitches, leaving the opening as the clearest marker of entry into the recurring pattern. In performance, such an opening can also cue collective entry before repetition supports coordination.
Exact intervals may differ between printed versions while initial direction and subsequent repetitive organization remain comparable. Under those conditions, contour gives a concise account of continuity and explains why beginning and repetition should be analyzed together rather than as independent attributes.
4 Range boundaries help segment otherwise similar stepwise motion
The second proposition shifts attention from beginnings to registral organization. In short children's melodies, much motion is conjunct. When consecutive phrases share this character, segmentation may depend less on interval size than on where each phrase sits within the available range. A phrase approaching an upper limit can assume a different formal role from one turning toward the lower part of the tune, even when both use similar scalar motion.
Range boundaries are thus treated as active formal cues. Upper and lower limits define a field within which repetition and return move toward, away from, or around registral reference points. In singing, those limits also affect tessitura and the perceptibility of climactic or settling gestures. The point follows from notated phrase placement and does not require reconstruction of a specific historical performance.
Range matters only where it adds explanatory value beyond rests, text syntax, meter, or contrasting motives. Where surface motion remains similar, registral placement can provide the more economical account of phrase differentiation; contour acquires formal meaning partly through the boundary toward which it moves.
5 Variant endings preserve recognizability by retaining directional profile
The third proposition concerns closure. Printed variants may regularize a cadence, alter a final interval, repeat a note, or redirect the last few pitches. Such changes need not erase melodic identity when the versions preserve a comparable terminal direction and registral destination. A descent to a familiar lower area, return toward a central pitch, or repeated-note close can retain the same contoural role despite different intervals.
Closure is therefore read relationally rather than as an isolated final note. What matters is whether the terminal gesture continues, reverses, returns, or settles in relation to the preceding phrase. When versions preserve that broader function, the ending can be understood as a changed realization of a comparable formal task; when direction, register, and degree of closure all change, the contour-based account weakens.
Closure also qualifies the first two propositions. Melodic identity is distributed across entrance, registral field, recurrence, and ending rather than concentrated at a single point.
6 Discussion
The three propositions are most useful when understood as mutually constraining rather than as a checklist. A distinctive opening matters differently in a tune whose later material continually changes than in one whose later phrases repeat. A registral boundary matters differently when the phrase structure is already obvious from rests or text than when the melody proceeds through uninterrupted stepwise motion. A closing contour matters differently when it confirms an established registral trajectory than when it introduces an entirely new one. The explanatory unit is consequently the relation among features, not the isolated presence of any single feature.
This relational account strengthens the paper's fit within Music and Performing Arts by connecting score structure to the practical organization of singing. Children's songs and singing games are performed repertories: their short phrases support breathing, group synchronization, movement, textual repetition, and rapid re-entry. Even when the surviving source is a printed page rather than a recording, contour can be read as part of that performative economy. Openings orient entry, repeated phrases stabilize participation, range boundaries shape vocal and formal space, and endings signal continuation or completion. Such observations remain grounded in notation while acknowledging that notation represents music intended to be enacted.
The analysis also clarifies what contour cannot establish. It cannot by itself demonstrate that a particular child recognized a tune, that a historical community preferred one variant, or that a melodic feature caused successful transmission. Those questions require listener experiments, ethnographic evidence, performance documents, or more detailed archival histories. The present argument instead identifies structural conditions under which printed variants can be compared without assuming that exact pitch identity is the only meaningful criterion. This distinction is important because the language of “memory” can otherwise slide too easily from a formal description of retained shape into an unsupported claim about mental processes.
Contour remains only one dimension of melodic identity. Versions may share direction while differing in interval size, rhythm, or text setting, and similar pitch collections may be organized in different directions. Its analytical strength lies in showing which relations persist when other dimensions vary, not in replacing pitch, rhythm, meter, or harmony.
Counter-reading remains essential. Continuity may derive from text, meter, or repeated rhythm rather than opening contour; segmentation may arise from linguistic syntax rather than range; and an altered ending may matter little when preceding material is overwhelmingly similar. A contour-based interpretation is convincing only when it explains a relation more economically than these alternatives.
The sources also require editorial caution. Newell and Gomme collected or compared materials associated with oral practice, whereas Willard and Crane present more explicitly arranged or pedagogical forms. Printed contours may therefore reflect transmission, harmonization, typesetting, or editorial normalization. The four books are not equivalent documentary witnesses; their common value is that each contains notated children's repertory suitable for comparison of melodic shape.
Text setting provides a further control on contoural interpretation. In singing games, repeated words, refrains, and action cues can coincide with melodic recurrence, while a changed textual unit may motivate a changed phrase ending. The analysis therefore avoids attributing every boundary to pitch alone. Where text and contour reinforce one another, the segmentation claim is stronger; where they conflict, the musical evidence must be described separately. This distinction is important for performance-oriented repertory because singers coordinate verbal, melodic, and physical timing. Contour remains the principal object of analysis, but it is read within that coordinated musical action rather than abstracted from the song's phrasing.
The principal limitation is the absence of complete tune-specific locators in the surviving analytical record. Without page, item, or tune numbers for every example, the argument cannot responsibly present detailed note-by-note reconstructions or claim exhaustive coverage of the four collections. This limitation narrows the evidentiary level of the findings. They should be read as structured comparative propositions grounded in verified music-bearing sources, not as a statistical survey of all melodies in those books. A future archival stage should identify the exact items and editions underlying each comparison and should preserve those locators alongside any encoded melodic data.
A second limitation is the absence of listener or performance data. The article's use of terms such as identity, recognition, and memorability is therefore analytical rather than experimental. It describes how versions can remain structurally relatable, not how reliably particular populations would identify them under controlled conditions. Experimental work could test whether listeners weight openings, range, and directional endings in the manner proposed here; performance research could examine how singers negotiate those features in rehearsal or play. Such work would extend rather than replace the present score-based account.
Within those limits, the contribution is clear. The article offers a compact vocabulary for discussing how children's melodies remain related despite surface change and, equally important, specifies when that vocabulary should be withheld. Contour is explanatory when directional shape, registral placement, repetition, and closure interact in a way that exact pitch comparison alone does not capture. It loses force when another musical or textual factor explains the same relation more directly. This balance between interpretive usefulness and evidentiary restraint is central to responsible analysis of historical performing repertories.
7 Conclusion
This article asked which contour relations can preserve melodic identity when printed children's-song versions differ in pitch detail or phrase ending. Comparative reading of verified nineteenth-century music-bearing collections supports a relational answer. Distinctive openings can carry increased identifying weight when later phrases are repetitive; registral boundaries can articulate otherwise similar stepwise motion; and altered endings can remain compatible with an established tune when their broad direction and destination are retained. These findings connect melodic identity to the organization of beginning, range, recurrence, and closure rather than to exact pitch strings alone.
The argument remains intentionally bounded. It concerns notated children's songs and singing games in the cited sources and does not establish historical listener response, developmental memory, prevalence, or causation. Nor does contour replace rhythm, interval pattern, text, meter, or tonal organization as components of tune identity. Its value is analytical: it provides a disciplined way to describe what remains structurally comparable when surface details change.
For Music and Performing Arts, the broader significance lies in treating printed children's melodies as performance-oriented musical objects. Their concise forms organize entry, repetition, vocal range, movement, and closure in ways that can be examined directly from notation while remaining open to later archival, experimental, and performance-based verification.
