Balanced, Extended, Reheard: Phrase Symmetry in Mozart's Piano Sonatas
Abstract
Phrase symmetry in Mozart is often described through proportional balance, a definition that can make extensions, elisions, and altered repetitions appear exceptional. This article asks how symmetry remains perceptible when phrase length or formal function changes. It compares the opening movements of the piano sonatas K. 280, K. 332, K. 333, and K. 545 by analysing basic ideas, continuations, cadential spans, repetitions, extensions, harmonic destinations, and registral returns. The comparison argues that symmetry operates as a remembered norm rather than an inflexible surface ratio; that extensions can preserve balance when they clarify formal function; and that repeated material changes analytical meaning when its harmonic goal or register changes. These findings locate balance in the relation between expectation and formal consequence while keeping claims tied to the score. The article contributes a relational account: unequal spans can remain intelligible when their functions remain legible, while similar repetitions can acquire different weight through tonal and registral recontextualization.

1 Introduction
The reading developed here examines how Mozart’s phrase symmetry remains perceptible while undergoing local expansion, elision, and reinterpretation. Its corpus comprises four opening sonata movements from specified volumes of the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe. The central claim is that symmetry operates as a remembered norm rather than an inflexible surface proportion. Here balance is heard through managed difference: an initial phrase model establishes expectation, while continuation, cadence, repetition, and register determine whether later spans confirm or revise it.
The question is narrower than a general history of classical symmetry. Within the selected movements, phrase symmetry is assessed through basic ideas, continuations, cadential spans, repetitions, extensions, elisions, harmonic destinations, and registral placement. Balanced, Extended, Reheard changes its interpretation only when those notated features change the formal relation under examination. The article does not infer compositional intention, historical reception, or performance convention from score structure alone.
The evidence is synthesized in three findings. First, symmetry operates as a remembered norm rather than an inflexible surface proportion. Second, extensions can preserve balance by clarifying formal function rather than by maintaining equal duration. Third, repetition changes meaning when harmonic destination or register changes. Read together, these propositions describe flexible symmetry as a temporal process of expectation and reinterpretation, not as a decorative effect or a numerical label applied after analysis.
Interpretive validity depends on convergence among musical cues. A phrase reading becomes persuasive when melodic recurrence, harmony, cadence, grouping, and register point toward a compatible formal function. No single cue is treated as self-sufficient. Where those cues conflict, the analysis records the conflict instead of forcing the passage into an idealized symmetrical scheme.
The research problem has descriptive and interpretive parts. The descriptive task identifies recurring basic ideas, continuation, cadential spans, extensions, elisions, and changes of harmonic goal or register. The interpretive task asks whether these changes preserve, weaken, or reconstruct an expectation of balance. Description precedes interpretation: phrase symmetry must arise from documented musical relations rather than an assumption that Mozart’s phrases are symmetrical.
In this article, phrase symmetry names neither a mood nor a value detached from form. It names a relation among preparation, formal function, and retrospective revision. Preparation concerns the expectation established by a basic idea or phrase model; formal function concerns the initiating, medial, or concluding role assigned by harmonic and cadential behavior; revision concerns a later event that changes how the earlier span is heard. The definition also permits negative findings: unequal spans need not be symmetrical if their functions sustain no recoverable relation.
Accordingly, the guiding question is: How does phrase symmetry remain audible when Mozart extends, elides, or recontextualizes formally related material? It is answered by tracking phrase-functional and tonal evidence in K. 280, K. 332, K. 333, and K. 545. The article argues that symmetry is best understood as a remembered and revisable norm whose force depends on formal function, harmonic destination, cadence, and register. The account explains flexible balance without reducing unequal lengths to hidden arithmetic or treating every deviation as irregularity.
The comparison is grounded in formal-function theory. Caplin distinguishes formal functions from mere equality of phrase length and provides terminology for basic ideas, continuation, cadence, period, sentence, and larger classical functions [1]. Schmalfeldt’s account of formal becoming, developed principally for early nineteenth-century repertory, is used more narrowly for how an initially perceived function can be retrospectively reinterpreted as a passage unfolds [2].
2 Phrase Symmetry in Mozart’s Piano Sonatas
The score corpus consists of the opening movements of Mozart’s Piano Sonata in F Major, K. 280/189e [3], Piano Sonata in F Major, K. 332/300k [4], Piano Sonata in B-flat Major, K. 333/315c [5], and Piano Sonata in C Major, K. 545 [6]. Meyer’s account of expectation supports the distinction between an anticipated continuation and a later event that redirects that expectation [7]. Lerdahl and Jackendoff provide a framework for hearing grouping and hierarchical tonal organization rather than treating phrase boundaries as visually obvious divisions [8]. Kerman supports the movement from technical analysis toward criticism while warning against treating analysis as an end in itself [9]. Cook’s survey of analytical methods supports a plural rather than method-exclusive approach to musical structure [10]. Hatten’s theory of markedness and expressive interpretation is used cautiously as an analogue for understanding how a formally altered recurrence can acquire different significance; it is not cited as direct evidence about Mozart’s sonatas [11].
The selected materials are four opening movements rather than a statistical sample of Mozart’s keyboard output. They permit contrastive analysis through the same categories: basic idea, repetition, continuation, cadential span, extension, elision, harmonic destination, and register. The comparison seeks analytical transferability, not frequency estimates or claims about Mozart’s complete oeuvre.
The evidentiary scale is local. A claim is admitted only when a notated event connects to its preparation and consequence. Repetition by itself is insufficient; the analysis asks whether harmony, cadence, register, texture, or formal position changes what the repetition does. Likewise, an extension is not treated as expressive simply because it is longer. It matters analytically only when the additional span changes or clarifies a formal function. These controls align the reading with Caplin’s functional distinctions and expectation-based hearing in Meyer and Lerdahl and Jackendoff [1,7,8].
Source control is integral to the comparison. K. 280 is read from the 1986 Neue Mozart-Ausgabe, Series IX, Work Group 25, Volume 1, edited by Wolfgang Plath and Wolfgang Rehm; K. 332, K. 333, and K. 545 are read from Volume 2 of the same series and year [3,4,5,6]. Fixing the edition matters because articulation, dynamics, ornaments, and other editorial differences can influence phrase segmentation or emphasis. The present claims are therefore tied to those cited score texts and do not presume that every historical or pedagogical edition presents identical local evidence.
3 Symmetry operates as a remembered norm rather than an inflexible surface proportion
The first interpretive result is that symmetry operates as a remembered norm rather than an inflexible surface proportion. The relevant symmetry is temporal: a listener first encounters a phrase model and then hears later material against that model. Equality of length can strengthen this relation, but it is neither necessary nor sufficient. What matters is whether the later span remains intelligible as a response to, continuation of, or revision of the earlier formal expectation.
Reading across the four cases shows why the model must operate at more than one scale. A basic idea can establish a short-range expectation, while a larger theme or exposition can preserve the memory of that relation after local expansion. Later evidence can therefore revise what initially seemed settled without erasing the initial hearing. This retrospective dimension explains how a phrase can remain balanced as a formal process even when its surface durations are unequal.
The proposition is strongest where recurrence does more than reproduce notes. To count as support, an occurrence must be prepared by an earlier phrase model and must change the interpretation of what follows. The relevant musical evidence includes melodic-rhythmic return, harmonic departure or arrival, cadential strength, registral transfer, and the placement of repetition within a larger function. This criterion keeps phrase symmetry tied to musical sequence instead of treating visual resemblance or equal bar counts as proof.
The first analytical reference point is the opening movement of the Piano Sonata in F Major, K. 280/189e [3]. The reading uses the opening thematic material to establish a local model of phrase balance, then follows the relation between recurrence, continuation, and cadential motion. The question is not whether every span contains the same number of measures; it is whether the listener can retain a stable functional comparison while the movement redirects or prolongs the route to closure.
In K. 280, the analysis therefore distinguishes the identity of recurring material from the function it performs at each appearance. A melodic or rhythmic profile can remain recognizable while its harmonic support and cadential position change. When that happens, similarity supplies memory but tonal syntax supplies direction. The case supports remembered symmetry only where those two dimensions remain coordinated: recognizable material recalls the earlier model, while a changed formal position explains why the recurrence is not simply equivalent to its first statement.
This approach also sets a falsifiable limit. If a purportedly balanced return cannot be connected to an earlier phrase model through identifiable thematic, harmonic, cadential, or registral evidence, it is not counted as symmetry. Likewise, if a longer span merely accumulates material without clarifying continuation or cadence, length alone cannot be redescribed as functional balance. K. 280 thus serves as a reference case for distinguishing remembered relation from retrospective rationalization.
A second comparison, the opening movement of the Piano Sonata in F Major, K. 332/300k, tests whether extension can preserve rather than destroy a sense of balance [4]. Here the analysis gives particular attention to the change from thematic statement toward continuation and cadence. The central issue is whether additional material prolongs an already legible function or instead produces a genuinely new formal unit.
For K. 332, the relevant contrast is therefore between surface duration and formal destination. An extension can make a phrase longer while leaving its role intelligible if the added span intensifies continuation, prolongs dominant preparation, delays cadential arrival, or rearticulates a cadential goal. Under those conditions, the listener compares functions rather than simply counting measures. The resulting balance is asymmetrical in duration but coherent in its directed relation between opening model and formal consequence.
The principal counter-reading treats any unequal span as evidence against phrase symmetry. The article answers by requiring functional evidence rather than aesthetic preference. If the added material does not clarify continuation, cadence, or return, the symmetry claim weakens. If the added material makes a formal destination more legible, however, the extension can be heard as part of the balancing process itself. This criterion prevents the argument from treating every expansion as confirmation.
The third case, the opening movement of the Piano Sonata in B-flat Major, K. 333/315c, gives priority to retrospective reinterpretation [5]. The analytical test is whether a recurrence changes significance when its harmonic destination or register differs from the earlier statement. Repetition is therefore evaluated relationally: what is repeated, what changes beneath or around it, and what new formal consequence follows?
The value of K. 333 for this argument is retrospective. A recognizable return can initially activate memory of the earlier phrase, but a different tonal goal or registral disposition can redirect the expected continuation. The analytical distinction is between literal similarity and functional equivalence. If a later statement merely reproduces the earlier function, it offers little support for the claim. If changed harmony or register alters its destination, the recurrence demonstrates how phrase symmetry can depend on memory while still generating difference.
This test also guards against projecting a later interpretation backward. The first statement must be heard on its own terms before a subsequent occurrence can revise it. The analysis therefore preserves the temporal order of evidence: initial model, intervening harmonic or formal process, and later return. The resulting account treats musical memory as an analytical relation grounded in score sequence, not as an unsupported claim about individual listener psychology.
The fourth score, the opening movement of the Piano Sonata in C Major, K. 545, functions as a resistant comparison [6]. Its comparatively transparent thematic and tonal presentation makes it useful for testing how much explanatory work the concept of flexible symmetry actually performs. A theory that labels every regular phrase and every altered span symmetrical would become analytically empty; K. 545 is therefore used to mark the boundary between ordinary recurrence and genuine reinterpretation.
4 Extensions preserve balance by clarifying function
The second result is that extensions can preserve balance by clarifying formal function. In a functional reading, an extra span does not automatically disrupt symmetry. Its effect depends on what it does: prolonging continuation, intensifying harmonic motion, delaying cadential closure, or rearticulating the route toward a goal can make the function of an unequal phrase more, rather than less, intelligible. Caplin’s distinction between function and duration is essential to this claim [1].
K. 332 provides the clearest test within the selected corpus because the analytical focus can remain on the relation between thematic statement, continuation, and cadence rather than on equal counting [4]. The argument does not claim that every extension in the movement preserves balance. It claims only that extension is compatible with balance when the added music strengthens a formal trajectory already prepared by the phrase. Where the added span obscures or replaces that trajectory, the symmetry claim must contract.
This finding also has a performance-facing implication without pretending to supply performance evidence. For a pianist, an analytical distinction between extension and new beginning affects how one may understand pacing, arrival, and the weight of a cadence; for a listener, the same distinction affects whether delay is heard against a remembered norm. The article does not prescribe tempo, articulation, or rubato. It identifies the score-based formal relation that a performance may choose to project, resist, or reinterpret.
5 Repetition changes meaning when harmonic destination or register changes
The final result argues that repetition changes analytical meaning when harmonic destination or register changes. A repeated motive or phrase can retain enough identity to recall its earlier function while acquiring a different role because its tonal goal, cadential placement, or registral disposition has changed. Return and repetition are therefore treated as distinct from functional equivalence. This distinction is consistent with the broader expectation-based and markedness-oriented perspectives used in the article [7,11].
K. 333 is the principal test because the analysis asks whether later recurrence activates the memory of an earlier phrase while redirecting its consequence [5]. K. 545 provides a control: where recurrence remains functionally straightforward, the argument does not require retrospective reinterpretation [6]. Comparing the two prevents the thesis from depending on similarity alone and keeps harmonic destination and register central to the determination of changed meaning.
For performance analysis, the consequence is again interpretive rather than prescriptive. A repeated figure in a new register or harmonic context may invite different voicing, timing, or dynamic shaping, but the score does not determine one obligatory realization. What the analysis can establish is the changed formal relation. Performance choices become relevant because they can make that relation more or less audible, not because the article possesses empirical evidence about how Mozart, historical performers, or present-day pianists necessarily render it.
6 Discussion: What Phrase Symmetry Changes
The three propositions modify one another. If symmetry is a remembered norm, then extension must be judged by what it does to that remembered relation rather than by its measure count. If extension clarifies function, then unequal duration can remain balanced without becoming secretly equal. If repetition changes meaning through harmonic destination or register, then similarity itself becomes evidence only when interpreted through tonal and formal context. Balanced, Extended, Reheard therefore explains phrase symmetry through ordered dependence rather than through a list of recurring devices.
The cases further indicate that Classical balance depends on managed difference and retrospective hearing. The argument does not require agreement about every phrase boundary. Competing segmentations can be compared by asking which one better accounts for melodic recurrence, harmonic progression, cadential articulation, and subsequent reinterpretation. In this sense, disagreement becomes local and testable rather than a choice between the claim that Mozart is symmetrical and the opposite claim that he is not.
Counter-reading functions as an analytical control. For remembered symmetry, the strongest alternative is a reading that explains the same succession without requiring an earlier phrase model. For functional extension, the alternative is that the extra span forms a new unit rather than prolonging an existing function. For changed repetition, the alternative is that harmonic or registral differences are incidental and leave the formal role unchanged. Each proposition survives only if it explains evidence that the simpler counter-reading leaves less coherent.
The contribution of Balanced, Extended, Reheard is therefore not the discovery of an unnoticed Mozartian device. Its contribution is to specify how familiar devices–-basic ideas, repetition, continuation, cadence, extension, elision, harmonic redirection, and registral return–-interact over time. Existing formal terminology identifies the components; the relational account explains why one occurrence establishes a norm, another stretches it, and a later recurrence can revise what the first occurrence meant.
This distinction also clarifies the status of absence. A missing cadence, omitted repetition, or deferred return does not become evidence simply because something expected is absent. The score must first establish a sufficiently specific expectation through prior grouping and tonal behavior. Only then can delay, avoidance, or non-return change the formal account. Negative evidence is therefore judged by the same standard as visible recurrence: it must be locatable in sequence and capable of changing the relation among preparation, function, and consequence.
The primary boundary of the claim is the corpus. Four opening movements cannot represent Mozart’s complete keyboard output or eighteenth-century phrase practice generally. The article also does not establish historical reception, compositional intention, or performance practice. Its evidence is the notated score text of specified editions, interpreted through established analytical concepts. Broader historical claims would require sources beyond the scores; performance claims would require recordings, treatises, editions with performance evidence, or performer-centered research.
7 Conclusion
The research addressed how Mozart’s phrase symmetry remains perceptible while undergoing local expansion and reinterpretation. Through formal-functional analysis of four opening sonata movements, it argued that symmetry operates as a remembered norm rather than an inflexible surface proportion; that extensions can preserve balance by clarifying formal function; and that repetition can change meaning when harmonic destination or register changes. These propositions converge on a relational account of flexible symmetry grounded in thematic identity, tonal direction, cadence, and formal consequence.
Beyond the individual cases, the findings indicate that Classical balance can depend on managed difference and retrospective hearing. Equal phrase length remains one possible cue, but it does not by itself establish function, and unequal duration does not by itself negate balance. The analytical question is whether a later span remains intelligible in relation to a previously established formal model.
The comparison answers the guiding question by showing that phrase symmetry can survive alteration when formal function and directed expectation preserve a relation among otherwise unequal spans. Its principal contribution is to connect extension, repetition, cadence, harmonic destination, and register without converting balance into a fixed numerical scheme. Because the study is confined to cited score editions and contains no empirical performance evidence, edition-specific comparison and performance-based testing remain necessary next steps.
