Abstract

Rhythmic displacement is often described as local disruption, a formulation that does not fully explain how subsequent events restore, revise, or preserve metrical expectations. This article asks how displacement can sustain argumentative continuity in Beethoven's piano music. It compares selected passages from the Piano Sonatas Op. 10 No. 3, Op. 31 No. 2, and Op. 57 with the Six Bagatelles, Op. 126. Score-based comparative reading follows syncopation, displaced accents, phrase overlap, registral attacks, recurrence, and later metrical clarification. The analysis argues that displacement becomes intelligible through retrospective reinterpretation, that registral emphasis can compete with meter without cancelling it, and that recurrence can transform local instability into large-scale rhythmic memory. The article develops a relational account of rhythmic argument grounded in expectation, temporal placement, and return rather than isolated accented events. Its claims remain limited by unspecified score editions and the absence of verified measure-level locators, which precludes edition-dependent conclusions.

1 Introduction

Displacement Without Disorder examines how rhythmic displacement can produce argumentative continuity rather than simple disruption. Its corpus comprises selected passages from Beethoven’s piano sonatas and late bagatelles. The central claim is that displacement becomes intelligible through subsequent reinterpretation. This proposition matters because rhythmic organization can revise what a listener hears as structurally accented without dissolving the notated meter. Attention therefore falls on syncopation, displaced accent, phrase overlap, registral attack, recurrence, and subsequent metrical clarification.

9 Conclusion

The reading of the selected passages was organized around the question of how rhythmic displacement can produce argumentative continuity rather than simple disruption. Through score-based comparative analysis relating surface accent, notated meter, phrase function, texture, register, and return, it argued that displacement becomes intelligible through later reinterpretation; that registral emphasis can compete with meter without erasing it; and that recurrence can transform local instability into large-scale rhythmic memory. These claims converge on a relational account of rhythmic argument.

Beyond the individual cases, the findings indicate that rhythmic organization can revise what listeners hear as structurally accented while preserving a recoverable metrical framework.
